ENERGY PLANNING
Northwest SEED works with communities
to develop and implement comprehensive energy plans
-- a statement of long and short-term goals and policies
to help guide the future of a community's energy use.
THe energy planning process typically addresses reidential,
commercial, and public sector energy use, taking into
account economic, environmental and social factors.
The resulting energy plan identifies actions and projects
that will help meet the communties' energy goals.
Recent energy planning projects of Northwest
SEED include:
Energy planning
with the Spokane and Nisqually Indian Tribes
Northwest SEED assisted the Spokane and Nisqually
Indian Tribes with the development and early implementation
of energy plans. Efforts included:
• Partnering with Planning Departments to develop
and lead interdepartmental teams in drafting energy
plans.
• Conducting conservation education and providing
residential energy efficiency supplies.
• Conducting energy audits of commercial and
public buildings.
• Implementing energy efficiency improvement
projects.
• Identifying renewable energy opportunities
and assisting in renewable energy feasibility studies.
• Identifying funding opportunities for further
energy improvement projects and assisting with grant
applications.
Energy Planning
with the Roosevelt Neighborhood of Seattle
As part of Northwest SEED’s Community Partnership
Project, we worked with the Roosevelt Neighborhood
Association to design and implement a community-wide
energy planning effort. Tasks included:
• Conducting research into neighborhood energy
planning strategies
• Assessing community interest via a grassroots
led survey
• Conducting outreach through bi-weekly community
meetings and local news
• The formation of action teams taking on specific
topics such as home weatherization
• Project fundraising
These planning efforts resulted in the
Roosevelt Neighborhood’s acceptance into the
Environmental Outreach and Stewardship (EOS) Alliance
Green Blocks program. A two-block area of the neighborhood
will receive energy audits and home weatherization.
The community will use this first implementation step
as a catalyst for additional residential outreach
and energy improvements.
